I try to teach (I act as a consultant)  on the subject of strategic thinking.

On browsing through the chronicles of WW2 I became impressed with Admiral Fletcher as an exemplary strategic performer.

On delving into his activities in WW2, I became even more pleased by his seemingly natural application of strategic thinking in his every act.

I came to realize that he was the key element in stopping an enemy that no other had been able to do and to do it with only the remnants of a depression era fleet.

Yet few seem to recognize his extreme merit.

For this reason I have put my research into book form:

1) as an example of such strategic thinking in which much can be accomplished with a strategic approach to thinking, and...

2) a history of a man that needs to become better known to the world.

If ‘History is the mirror in which humanity looks into to learn’, the days in which Admiral Fletcher fought, are among the most important days in history.

But looking at the quantity and quality of Fletcher’s lessons, make us think that, “The Days of Fletcher is among the most useful and fruitful books of those which refer to this History.

Frank Jack Fletcher was Senior Officer Present at the Carrier Battle of the Coral Sea, and Senior Officer Present and Officer in Tactical Command at the Carrier Battles of Midway and Eastern Solomon Is.  Even he faced the most unfavorable circumstances, always as the under dog, he was the most successful combat commander in American Navy in all its history, and in all the World History since Trafalgar. He obligued to retrieve Japanese Fleet and its invasion forces at these three battles, his 60 % of all carrier battles in history, sinking six of enemy carriers, including four big carriers of the six that had attacked Pearl Harbor. His cost was only two carriers. No other commander in history destroyed so much carriers.

He was the real victor at Midway, despite the wrong conclusions of Samuel Morison, who made confusion in all people and many historians with them. He wrongly gave the merit of that victory to the notable admiral Raymond Ames Spruance, who was a great commander, but not at Midway.  Spruance’s Task Force 16 made several serious errors in that battle which costed carrier Yorktown - he recognized this in his battle report  He also recognized Fletcher's merit as the victor in a letter to him.  In oposition the decisions of the commander of American Carriers  Frank Jack Fletcher were notable.

In an article about Fletcher, Captain Marvin E Butcher said:

...with little or no aviation experience, a few admirals, experienced chiefly in an old way of war, took a new technology, applied it as best they could and won control of the Pacific Ocean”.

LET WE WHO NOW PRESUME TO JUDGE ADMIRAL FLETCHER, HOPE THAT WE CAN PERFORM AS WELL, SHOULD WE BE SO TESTED AT THE ONSET OF A WAR FOR NATIONAL SURVIVAL.

Now, more than thirty years after his death, what else can he give us?

Perhaps the Admiral can give us much more, through the sole reading of a book like “The Days of Fletcher”. In words of its Author, this book is ‘A Journey from History to Strategy, and a Contribution to today’s Organizations”.

His behavior, his greatness, his humility, and his consideration towards other people could be a huge contribution in the establishment of new generations, even more being a man who attracted attacks from the envious and minors, because his career was that of a winner, a vanquisher hero, in the most serious moment of his country’s history and, actually, of the whole western free world.

In that world in which baseness contaminates and combines with the implacable demand of success, he was the most successful, could teach us how reach it and also how to be great, because he was also so.

And because being a great among greats, he was also humble, he could teach us to keep the humility of the greats.

The capacity of decision and self-discipline which – in the words of the British Author Richard Hough – “were to mark him out as one of the really great admirals of the Second World War...” can greatly help us in our duties, because these qualities are very important in any profession.

His great intuition as a strategist, the firmness in the execution of his decisions because of his trust in them – even though sometimes their deepness put them far from the common people’s understanding – are worthy of being imitated.

His leadership capacity and his impeccable management of the command structures, are invaluable lessons.

His easiness to find true values and abilities in his men, and obtain the best utility from them, are necessary, perhaps essential, in our daily duties..

And finally, his devotion to his duties, to the owed example and to put the Country’s and organization’s objectives in the first place while leaving the personal ones at the end of it all, were undoubtedly the reason for his success, and could be the reason for ours.

All these qualities conform a patrimony to be read and understood by us, if that we are looking for is an authorized and successful conduct which guides us.

The man who, before being a sailor, was trained in the entrepreneur’s mind of his grandfather, a banker, and his father, a businessman, knew how to constantly apply these abilities inside and outside the naval profession. Midway, Coral Sea and Guadalcanal, are the lighthouses that shine on his memory, but are also eternal signs that tell us:
“Do this if you want to be successful”.

Reading this book will let you profit from all this baggage of undeterminable value.

Reading this book will let you be very aware when the pettiness of certain historians may be trying to destroy the cultural legacy that each of the great has left us.

Reading this book will also let you begin to know the world of the three natures, those of the tactician, the strategist and the administrator after reading the advances in it, in the book “The Three Natures” by the same author.

And reading this book will finally let you know that the capacity to act with great ability and decision in any situation into which life places us is inside ourselves.
